Hi everyone!

I have been doing a lot of data editing lately, especially tabular editing, and have come across two significant bugs that Esri will not fix (known limitations).

BUG 1: You cannot join tables and/or layers with the same name. In some versions, it will appear to work, but it really doesn't. You'll need to rename one of them (not the name in the map, but the name on disk) in order for the join to work. (I think this was logged as BUG-000145184)

BUG 2: If you have two tables and/or layers that have a definition query set on them, a join between the two tables will not work correctly. The workaround is to export the data you want, perform the join, and then bring that back into the larger dataset. I don't have a bug # for this one yet, as I just reported and confirmed it with Esri this morning. For example:
  • I have a statewide street centerline layer that has a definition query to show only county x.
  • I have a statewide street name alias table that has a definition query to show only county x. When filtered, it includes 1987 rows.
  • When I perform a join between the two datasets, even though I say "Keep all records", it returns just 636 rows and the joins themselves are wrong.
I think that this are significant limitations and wanted to make sure you all knew about them! The second bug seemed to be a bug in both ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro.
