OpenTopography: Open Access and Processing of Statewide LiDAR Topography

Friday, March 25, 2:00 - 3:00 pm ET

OpenTopography is an initiative that began in 2009, focused on making lidar data easy to access and use. Through a partnership with IGIC, OpenTopography distributes the 2011-2013 Indiana statewide lidar dataset. This webinar will cover two topics:

  1. An overview of OpenTopography’s tools and functionality, and a discussion of how the Indiana lidar dataset has been utilized. OpenTopography’s free and easy to use system provides on-demand processing tools (custom DEM generation, normalized digital surface model, contour lines, raster and point cloud visualization, hydrology tools). Over 6,000 users have accessed Indiana lidar through OpenTopography for applications such as civil engineering, construction, architecture, utilities, land surveying, agriculture, research and education.
  2. The growing availability of statewide lidar datasets presents an opportunity to compare these data to see how the earth’s surface is changing. OpenTopography recently made the first ever map of statewide topographic change, using the two statewide lidar datasets available for Indiana. We completed the processing using high-performance computing resources at the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The results demonstrate a variety of natural and anthropogenic processes acting to modify the landscape across Indiana, including infrastructure development, erosion along rivers and the Lake Michigan coastline, sink-holes, agriculture, and forestry.

Presenters:

Christopher Crosby is a co-founder of the OpenTopography project and member of the leadership team. He works at UNAVCO, Inc in Boulder, CO where he manages the Geodetic Imaging program. He is a geologist by training and has 20+ years of experience in the management and utilization of lidar data.

Chelsea Scott is a member of the OpenTopography leadership team based at Arizona State University. She has extensive background in different remote sensing techniques such as lidar, UAVs, and InSAR. She often uses lidar in projects aimed at assessing seismic hazard. She is a voting member for Arizona’s lidar group.
